A former photojournalist and editor, career highlights for Mahaskey include more than twelve months work as an embedded journalist covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Beginning his career in Southern Iowa, Mahaskey has moved from coverage of county fairs to national political conventions, small town football to professional athletics, and local news to international assignments in Afghanistan, Iraq, India, UAE, Japan, and elsewhere across the globe.
Broadcast credits for still images included CNN, Fox News, NBC Nightly News, ABC’s Nightline and a PBS Frontline piece that documented President Trump’s rise to power. Mahaskey’s video work has been used by CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, Discovery Channel and others. National publication credits include People Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated, Time, Politico, Der Spiegel and scores of daily newspapers worldwide.
For his work as a journalist, Mahaskey received numerous national and international including Pictures of the Year International, White House News Photographers Association, American Photography, Photo District News Photo Annual, Siena International Photo Awards, SABEW, Peter Lisagor Awards (Chicago), multiple National Headliner Awards and named Photographer of the Year at National Press Photographers Association's Northern Short Course.
A graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mahaskey holds a Master of Fine Arts in Studio. Mahaskey exited journalism in October, 2021, and today uses his culmination of visual, design and storytelling experiences in public service.
