Portrait of Bishop Calvin Woods, Sr. of Shiloh Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, photographed Feb. 19, 2016. Commenting on this year’s election, Woods said: “It’s a mess in a way. When we sow the wind, we reaped a whirlwind (referring to biblical verse Hosea 8:7). So we can’t blame anybody but ourselves for that. So we have to deal with it. Some of us are too wishy-washy when it comes to justice and things of that nature.” The portrait was made as part of a series of interviews with southern pastors to gain their perspective of the 2016 race (http://www.politico.com/magazine/gallery/2016/02/southern-black-churches-2016-000619?slide=0)

For better or worse, Donald Trump supporters might be the most passionate voters in American politics today. They bring costumes, spit in the faces of protesters and sneer at the reporters in the press pen. “That kind of stuff only adds to the excitement,” Trump said at a Worcester, Massachusetts, rally in November as police dragged away a protester.
Their signs might say it all: The Silent Majority Stands with Trump. Trump events are electrified by the feeling that these people, too—many white, working- and middle-class—can be marginalized, and they’re tired of the muzzling effect of political correctness that keeps them from saying so. They believe in the Trump promise of making America great again—and there are enough of them to drive record Republican turnout this primary season. This is one portrait in a series where photographer M. Scott Mahaskey traveled the country talking with them, and this is his inside look at Trump’s passionate following.

When it started in the 1960s, the Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show at Knob Creek Gun Range outside of Louisville, Kentucky, attracted only a handful of people. Today, the twice-yearly event draws about 13,000 spectators as they come to watch shooters fire fully automatic, military-grade weapons at downrange targets, instantly shredding propane tanks and cars. The event builds to a crescendo of fire and heat during Saturday’s “Night Shoot” (shown here) as range security officers outfit targets with explosives that detonate on impact. Gun rights proved to become one of the biggest dividers among potential voters and these gun owners are doubling down on their rights—and, as a Hillary Clinton presidency seemed likelier by the day, taking a closer look at where they’ll take their fight for gun rights next.– Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot held October 15, 2016 at the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, KY.
